One Dead, Two In Custody After Fatal Shooting In Wapato Friday
Detectives from the Yakima County Sheriff's Office and Wapato Police are investigating a fatal shooting reported late Friday (May 5, 2023). Deputies and officers were called to a home in the 700 block of Wasco Avenue in Wapato at about 11:00 pm., after a man told police that his neighbor was just shot.
THE VICTIM WAS FOUND SHOT IN THE FRONT YARD
When authorities arrived, they found a man lying in the front yard of a home. He had been shot multiple times. The victim was rushed to a hospital, but he died during transit in the ambulance. Deputies and officers then started an investigation and reviewed security cameras in the area in order to identify a suspect or a suspect's vehicle.
TWO VEHICLES WERE IDENTIFIED BUT ONLY ONE WAS STOPPED
Two vehicles were identified and a short time later an officer in Toppenish spotted one of the vehicles with three people inside. The officer tried to stop the vehicle, but it took off at a high speed. The suspect's vehicle eventually crashed into a power pole near the city of Buena. The three people in the vehicle fled, but all three were eventually arrested. One man was released, but two remain in custody. Both face charges of 2nd-degree-murder.
SECURITY CAMERAS SHOW HOW THE VICTIM WAS SHOT
Police say security cameras show the victim was standing in the front yard of the home and then two vehicles pulled up. Gun fire came from both vehicles and the victim, who has not been identified, suffered gunshots to the abdomen, chest and leg.
The investigation continues and more arrests are possible. Police aren't saying what the motive was in the crime, or if the shooting was gang related.
